Henze recounts their unexpected meeting in Greenwich Village, recording at Abbey Road Studios, Daltrey’s remarkable vocal instincts and relentless determination, the business pressures surrounding the album, and Henze’s disputed songwriting contribution. Erica Kent’s debut novel Black Dog is a raw, darkly funny coming-of-age story about rock music, addiction, loss, and recovery in 1980s Boston. The story begins with an 11-year-old Jessica Ryder reeling from the murder of John Lennon, and music remains part of the soundtrack as her life becomes increasingly consumed by drugs and alcohol.

In this episode, Erica Kent joins Booked On Rock to discuss the personal experiences that informed Black Dog, why Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” helped inspire the novel, and how artists including The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, the Grateful Dead, the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, and Jimi Hendrix became woven into Jessica’s world. Erica also talks candidly about getting sober at age 20, experiencing a relapse years later, and what that experience taught her about the lasting power of addiction. 

We also explore why John Lennon’s death represented a loss of innocence for her generation, the connection between rock culture and substance use, why sobriety doesn’t mean giving up the music you love, and the idea at the heart of Black Dog: recovery isn’t a simple journey from darkness into light. It’s complicated, contradictory, and deeply human.

Aaron Belansky is taking on an ambitious classic rock experiment called The Review Board, listening to 329 albums across 987 total listens to determine his personal Top 10 classic rock artists. And he’s doing it all while walking—roughly 740 hours of music and an estimated 2,000 miles.

In this episode, Aaron joins Booked On Rock to reveal some of the biggest surprises so far. He explains why Led Zeppelin has climbed to No. 2 in his rankings, why Eric Clapton doesn’t hit him the way he once did, how The Rolling Stones won him over after years of resistance, and why Pink Floyd’s early catalog is hurting their standing. He also discusses rediscovering The Who’s Live at Leeds, hearing familiar albums differently after repeated listens, and whether we love classic rock because it’s truly great—or simply because we’ve heard it thousands of times.

It’s a fascinating experiment in music, memory, repetition and changing tastes—and a reminder that even the albums and artists we think we know can sound very different when we go back and really listen.
