Daily Comedy News with Johnny Mac

Johnny Mac cold-reacts to The New York Times’ list of the 100 best TV shows of the 21st century, focusing mainly on comedies and frequently arguing many rankings are “criminally low” or overrated. He’s shocked by Community at #97 and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia at #78, questions shows ranked above Community, and notes unfamiliarity with titles like Better Things, Somebody Somewhere, Insecure, and Normal People. He praises Barry, Peep Show, Chappelle’s Show, Key & Peele, and The Americans; calls Ozark and Arrested Development overrated; critiques Parks and Rec and 30 Rock; and comments on list oddities like House of Cards imagery. He highlights top entries including Atlanta (#10), Curb (#9), Veep (#7), Fleabag (#5), Succession (#4), The Wire (#2), and Breaking Bad at #1, and invites listener feedback in the show’s Facebook group.

Johnny Mac argues a 12-minute 2006 Philadelphia clip captures Bill Burr’s career: facing a hostile, drunk crowd after Tracy Morgan and Dom Irrera struggled, Burr delivered a profane takedown of the city and won a standing ovation by being “real,” not performing anger. He traces Burr’s path from Canton, Massachusetts (Emerson College, warehouse job) to Boston standup in 1992, New York in 1995, and the late-’90s NYC scene (Patrice O’Neal, Louis C.K., Dave Attell, Jim Norton) that shaped his honest, less-polished style; Patrice’s philosophy deeply influenced Burr, whose grief after Patrice’s 2011 death was public. The script covers Burr’s 2007 Monday Morning Podcast, All Things Comedy (2012), specials from 2008–2019, his controversial 2020 SNL monologue, 2025 Saudi festival backlash and Burr’s response, acting roles (Breaking Bad, The Mandalorian), and his later reflection on anger and his father.
