  • Episode 516: I'm Still Here, The Seed of the Sacred Fig reviews
This might be the art-housiest Arthouse Tuesday we've ever done, as we catch up with two of the five films nominated for best international feature at this year's Oscars. The first, "I'm Still Here," is also up for the top prize of all, best picture, as well as best actress for Fernanda Torres' beautifully subtle performance. Torres stars in this true story as a wife and mother trying to hold her family together during Brazil's military dictatorship in the early 1970s. Veteran filmmaker Walter Salles directs. It's in theaters now. Then we catch up with "The Seed of the Sacred Fig" from Iranian writer-director Mohammad Rasoulof, who made the film entirely in secret. Rasoulof, who also won best director from the LA Film Critics Association, tells the story of a family that gets caught up in the political turmoil of the recent "Woman Life Freedom" uprising in Tehran. In theaters and streaming. We still have "Flow" to go, and then we'll have reviewed all five films in this category. Keep an eye (and ear) out for our Oscar predictions livestream on Feb. 25. Until then, thanks for listening! Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/

  • Episode 515: You're Cordially Invited, Companion (With SPOILERS!) reviews
January finally -- mercifully -- has come to an end. And we're here to help you wrap it up with a quick visit on Breakfast All Day. First, we review "You're Cordially Invited," the kind of comedy that used to come out in actual theaters but is now streaming on Prime Video. Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell clash in this extremely R-rated wedding comedy. It's getting extremely mixed reviews but we laughed a lot.  Then, we have a SPOILER review of the sci-fi thriller "Companion," because we didn't know how to tell you how great it was without getting into all of its twists. So if you'd like to avoid spoilers, you might want to turn off this episode around the 15:09 mark. If not, feel free to listen with reckless abandon. Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid play a young couple who travel with some friends to a beautiful house in the woods. Bad things happen. You've been warned! No Movie News LIVE! today because Christy had lunch plans with one of her best friends who was visiting from out of town. But come back and see us next Friday, Feb. 7 at Noon Pacific time. • Episode 514: Luther: Never Too Much, The Girl With the Needle reviews
It's a random Arthouse Tuesday here at Breakfast All Day, with reviews of two extremely different films. First, we discuss the documentary "Luther: Never Too Much," about the late, legendary R&B singer Luther Vandross. Director Dawn Porter's film is an appreciative exploration of Vandross' talent, work ethic and attention to detail. Whether you're a huge fan or you don't know much about him, you'll find this entertaining. In theaters this weekend, streaming on OWN starting Feb. 7 and Max starting Feb. 8. Then, we catch up with "The Girl With the Needle," the exquisitely beautiful and harrowing Danish film that's up for the best international feature Oscar. Director and co-writer Magnus von Horn tells the story of a young pregnant woman (Van Carmen Sonne) who seeks help from a charismatic shopkeeper (Trine Dyrholm) in 1919 Copenhagen. Shot in high-contrast black and white, it's gorgeous but grim. It was also on Christy's top-10 list for 2024. In theaters now and streaming on Mubi.  Thanks for being here. Come on back Friday for reviews of "Companion" and "You're Cordially Invited." Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/

  • Episode 513: Flight Risk, Presence, One of Them Days, Movie News LIVE!
For the most part, it's a surprisingly good week for January movies here at Breakfast All Day. We begin with the one that's not so good: "Flight Risk," and even that's not completely terrible. Mark Wahlberg stars as a pilot flying a U.S. Marshal (Michelle Dockery) and a fugitive (Topher Grace) to Anchorage, but the skies aren't so friendly. Mel Gibson directs, which you'd never know from the trailers. In theaters. Then, we loved "Presence," the latest experimental lark from Steven Soderbergh. It's a haunted house movie where the ghost is the camera. Soderbergh makes clever, elegant use of his first-person perspective. In theaters. We also catch up with the comedy "One of Them Days," which is a total delight. Keke Palmer and SZA have terrific chemistry as roommates who must come up with the rent on their run-down Los Angeles apartment by the end of the day, or they'll be evicted. It felt really good to laugh this week. In theaters. Finally, we did our usual Friday Movie News LIVE! We followed up on Oscar nominations, our wildfire fundraiser, Razzie Award nominations and the start of the Sundance Film Festival. No news on Jan. 31, but come back and join us on Feb. 7. Thanks for being here with us! • Episode 512: 2025 Oscar Nominations LIVE Chat!
We had an incredible turnout today for our annual Oscar Nominations LIVE Chat! Thanks to all the lovely folks who woke up early with us on Hollywood's biggest morning. "Emilia Pérez" leads all nominees with 13 -- which is historic for a foreign-language film -- followed by "The Brutalist" and "Wicked" with 10 each. We were thrilled by some nominations (Coralie Fargeat in best director for "The Substance") and bummed by the omission of others (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross in best score for "Challengers"). And we were proud and thrilled to receive such a tremendous outpouring of support for our LA Wildfire fundraiser. All the Super Chat and Super Thanks donations we've gotten will go toward three charities we've selected: the Entertainment Community Fund, Pasadena Humane Society and World Central Kitchen. Just from the stream alone, we raised $936.59, which is way more than we expected, and that number keeps growing as people have added to it in the hours since. So thank you all for your generosity. If you'd like to contribute, the YouTube link is here. Click on the three dots beneath the video, then Thanks. Let us know what your thoughts were on this year's nominations. And keep an eye out for our Oscar Predictions livestream, which will happen a few days before the Academy Awards on March 2.
