Most of these events occurred in my bedroom at night, but increasingly I had minor experiences out and about in daytime, such as faint crawling and shuffling sensations on my head and face. I tried on all the ‘normal’ explanations – creaking old house, wind, sleep paralysis, hypnogogia, etc. – but none of them were a fit for most of what I experienced. I was left to conclude that I had a poltergeist. Believing that ghosts or unwanted spirits were the cause of the problem and watching ghost-related media made me afraid… and that fear made it much worse.

‘Dad was moved into a private room as he was declining in health. Due to the medication being administered, he was sleeping more and more. This is where little events made me question all I believed in before about life after death. As soon as he moved into the room, a little sparrow, which seemed to be injured, appeared outside by the glass doors. The sparrow looked as though it wanted to come into the room. A few days passed, and the sparrow remained by the glass doors, observing …’

‘We were stuck in a loop. I don’t know if I would classify it as a time loop, but whatever was in that clearing, it had us running in circles.
