08/10/2026 | 58minNearly four years after first reporting that South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Carmen Mullen was caught on video trying to find probable cause to arrest a mentally ill man in her gated neighborhood, Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell are finally seeing justice start to take shape. But will there be consequences?
On Sept. 29, 2026, Judge Mullen appeared before the Commission on Judicial Conduct to answer for her actions on Dec. 7, 2017, on Hilton Head Island, when she inserted herself into a landlord-tenant dispute with sheriff’s deputies at the scene.
Judge Mullen says she was duty-bound to protect the man and get him medical help. Does the evidence show that? Not at all — in Mandy's and Liz's opinions, anyway. However, good ole’ legacy media, as always, seems to have her back.
On Part One, we share hearing testimony — including from the deputy on the scene that night — and go back to the receipts, comparing Judge Mullen's sworn story against what she actually said and did while suggesting ways to get the man charged and jailed — a man deputies said had committed no crime.

We knew something was fishy about the Greg Alexander leak — and then Team Murdaugh told on themselves. Right as Part 1 wrapped, Dick and Jim filed a third motion to compel, accusing the state of a Brady violation for sitting on a 2023 witness statement they claim to have "learned of from a newspaper." But the motion does something reckless: it outs the names of alleged state grand jury witnesses and SLED's alleged source — the very secrecy meant to protect witnesses in a case involving the freaking Murdaughs.
Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell walk through the subpoena timeline, the Joe McCulloch factor, and the Icarus problem at the heart of the defense's argument: to blow up the Alexander investigation, they have to treat allegations as true that would point straight back at Murdaugh.

For years, investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell have reported on Alexander's ties to Murdaugh — and huge questions have existed from the start about his movements that night and why he was at the murder scene at all.
Alex's little brother tried to answer those questions at the 2023 trial, but only added to the confusion.
While it's encouraging that SLED and the Attorney General's Office are finally investigating, Mandy and Liz smell something fishy. Why is this leaking now? 26/09/2026 | 44minIn her official answer to the ODC, Judge Carmen Mullen says she was just a good citizen worried about a mentally ill man's safety. In Part Two of True Sunlight #166, Investigative Journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell play the recording from that December 2017 night in Port Royal Plantation and let her own words do the talking.
Mullen tells deputies she has sentenced Ernie "the Attorney" before. She questions whether he has a lease and says she told the homeowner to press charges, then introduces herself to that homeowner… for the first time…? She says "you gotta get rid of him" and asks to "find some charges." According to the police report, she also suggests she could sign the warrant herself.
We also dig into the threat-filled lawsuit against Ernie that Mullen dismissed months earlier, and a Hilton Head real estate agent named Moose Rini whose name keeps coming up in police reports, trial transcripts, and sentencing memos.
Judge Mullen's hearing before the Commission on Judicial Conduct is Tuesday, September 29, in Columbia and our team will be there to capture and share all the details.
