Shelly Miscavige is more than a celebrity headline or a rumor that won’t die. She’s a real person who worked at the highest levels of Scientology leadership, and she hasn’t been seen publicly for years. I’m joined by Ann Gollert Hill to trace what we personally knew of Shelly Miscavige at Scientology’s international headquarters in Gilman Hot Springs, California, often called Gold Base. We talk about what her job actually meant as Chairman of the Board Assistant at the Religious Technology Center, how it put her beside David Miscavige for decades, and why someone with that much access could be treated as a threat. Every polished Scientology video has a backstory, and the one you never see is the approval chain, the fear, and the constant rewrites. We sit down with longtime Golden Era Productions director Mitch Brisker to unpack how Scientology’s internal training films were made, why L. Ron Hubbard’s written rules boxed in every creative decision, and how David Miscavige operated as the final gatekeeper for wardrobe, casting, dailies, edits, and even the final mix. When one person can reject a day’s work, “filmmaking” turns into a compliance test.

Those Sea Org Day photos are supposed to look like joy. What they actually show, once you know how the International Base works, is hierarchy, surveillance, and a shrinking population trying to look “fine” for the camera.

We’re joined by Gary Jackson Moorhead, former security chief at Scientology’s Int Base, to help us decode rare Sea Org Day 2009 images and the stories attached to the faces. We talk about how Sea Org Day is pitched as pride and recommitment, but can also be used as optics: a convenient set of smiling shots that can be waved around when former members describe abuse, exhaustion, and control. Along the way we dig into the 1990 flood, the culture of punishment and promotions, why some executives appear (or vanish), and what physical details in the photos suggest about living conditions.

From there we widen the lens. We break down Church of Spiritual Technology (CST), the bunker system, and why “preserving the tech” involves massive stores of precious metals.
