Three men. Three murders. Decades without answers. I’m in the Niagara Falls region of Canada where I just finished one of our Psychology of Cults speaking tour stops last night. Yesterday, I swung by the Niagara Falls Regional Police building across from the famous falls and hung around, studying three cold cases that have haunted this region for decades. A man, beaten to death in his own bed nearby. Another shot on a road a short distance away and the disturbing murder of a retired teacher who was beaten to death in his Welland home. I wanted to share these crime stories before I head out on my way to tonight’s show in Milton, Ontario.

Leïla Ben Salem, a 45-year-old mother who worked for the Canadian Revenue Agency was killed inside her Montreal apartment while she was taking part in an online work meeting. Police would later arrest a 33-year-old man named Youcef Moussaoui and charged him with first-degree murder. Police say the case is not a domestic violence homicide, but various back-channel reports suggest the woman died from blunt force trauma, allegedly at the hands of the man who worked in the area. So, let’s look at the timeline, the victimology, and what behavioral analysis can and cannot tell at this point. The federal murder trial of former Stoughton, Massachusetts, police officer Matthew Farwell has entered its second week, and testimony from October 19 and 20 has exposed more disturbing details about his relationship with 23-year-old Sandra Birchmore, the young woman prosecutors allege he murdered in February 2021. FBI testimony has revealed thousands of messages documenting their relationship, Sandra's pregnancy, Farwell's reaction to becoming a possible father, and the surprising results of DNA testing that identified someone else as the biological father of her unborn child. Jurors have also heard from Sandra's physician, who described a young woman preparing for motherhood, and a police dispatcher who testified about Farwell's angry reaction when someone reported his relationship with Sandra.
Let’s discuss the significance of digital evidence, possible grooming and coercive control, how investigators evaluate staging, and why the defendant's belief about paternity may matter more than the actual DNA results. Ted Kaczynski spent nearly two decades terrorizing America with a bombing campaign aimed at people he believed represented industrial and technological power. Luigi Mangione, the man accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024, allegedly carried a short-handwritten statement that police said reflected his motive and mindset. Public reporting also showed Mangione had praised parts of Kaczynski’s manifesto online, even while saying Kaczynski belonged in prison.
In this episode, we compare the Unabomber’s crimes, ideology, target selection, language, and behavioral presentation with the alleged writings and conduct tied to Mangione. This is not about glorifying either man. It is about understanding how grievance can harden into identity, how identity can become mission, and how one violent offender may borrow from another without copying him point for point. Kaczynski’s manifesto, Industrial Society and Its Future, is publicly available online, and Mangione’s alleged handwritten statement has also been publicly circulated and reported on, though it is much shorter and should be treated more cautiously because it did not function like a formal book-length manifesto.

I’m in Ontario as we get ready to open The Psychology of Cults tour in Richmond Hill. Today I want to examine two Canadian criminal cases that couldn’t look more different on the surface. Roch Tear - EEE - OH called himself Moses and led the Ant Hill Kids into isolation, violence and murder. In Toronto, Church of Scientology operatives infiltrated government offices, including the Ontario Provincial Police and the Ministry of the Attorney General. Neither crime happened in Richmond Hill itself, but both tell us something important about what can happen when loyalty to a person or an organization becomes more important than law, evidence, family and ordinary human decency.
