- Does your industry treat the hiring process like the Wild West? Maybe resumes are optional, cover letters are unheard of and the “interview” is really just a chat with the boss.
Just because it’s “just a chat” doesn’t mean a little preparation won’t help. Putting more thought into your resume, bringing a few stories to mind, preparing some questions or writing a genuinely personalised cover letter can help you communicate what you have to offer—without suddenly becoming stiff or overly corporate.
And when nobody else is doing those things, that small amount of effort can become a HUGE advantage. In this week’s episode, we’re talking about “interview culture” and how to match the vibe of your industry while quietly raising your own standard.
If this episode doesn’t sound like it applies to you, send it to the person in your life who insists they don’t need interview advice because their industry is “different.” We know they think they don’t need us. That’s okay. We’re still right.
🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Victoria “Emma and Sarah, you both are stars! I'm so grateful to have found Interview Boss as you've completely changed my job search mindset. I was looking for a new role after a layoff while on maternity leave (ouch!), and I was in such a negative headspace going in. I'd been casually looking for over a year in fear of a future layoff and not having success so the negativity spiral was very real. After listening (and re-listening) to your episodes over two months, I was a changed woman. I navigated 2.5 months of intense job hunting, 60+ applications, 20+ interviews, and 3 job tasks with you by my side. My husband joked that our newborn was going to have an Aussie accent after listening to so many hours of you two! I'm so happy to have landed a new role where there were all green flags during the interview process. You helped me SO much to bounce back from the jobs I didn't land (I won't call them rejections!), and I know that positivity helped me to land the right role. Thank you, and (if you read this on air), job seekers listening, keep your head up! You will persevere!”

www.interviewboss.com.au - "When can you start?" is a simple interview question...but what if the honest answer is "It depends."
In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma unpack how to have this conversation when factors like childcare, relocation or other commitments mean you can't give a straightforward date.
Being upfront can feel risky, but it's often the best approach. We'll share how to set realistic expectations, explain your situation professionally, and give employers a timeframe they can actually work with.

“Thank you so much for your help prepping for my interview! I landed a dream job as an instructional designer for a construction company, but it came out of nowhere and I had little time to prep. In one of your episodes you gave some great advice on how to politely and respectfully lead an interview if the interviewer doesn’t ask many questions. That’s exactly the curveball I was given, but I was able to steer the conversation toward my STAR responses and knocked it out of the park.“

www.interviewboss.com.au - POV: You finally land a job interview...then discover someone from your current workplace is sitting on the interview panel. 😳 What do you do?
In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma unpack a listener's real-life government job interview dilemma, including whether to tell your boss you're job hunting, how to handle a familiar face on the panel, and why the best advice doesn't always come from the internet.
🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Eibhan!
“Hi Sarah and Emma! I am about to finish my final year of university and the graduate job market over here is super competitive. I could spend hours talking about the amount of jobs I have applied for and not heard back from or applied and things didn’t work out, but I finally found my dream role. It’s essentially a tech consultant role, which combines my two greatest interests (coding and working with people). Once I realised I actually had a shot even after seeing that this job was super competitive, I was recommended your podcast by my brother (shoutout to you Joey love you). Listening to your podcast I felt like one of the girls despite being a tall large man. Anyway, in short, I grew so much in confidence and built trust in myself, came into the interview in the right way. I can’t cover the amount of tips that helped me, but my favourite was from the episode about using your notebook. The final interview went really great and I came out of it feeling like I smashed it. The interesting thing is that about two weeks later I got an email saying they have an update they would love to share with me. My heart dropped when they then told me I was a ‘perfect silver medalist’. They went with another candidate but essentially proposed something else for me. They really loved who I was and my story and decided to kind of create a new role for me which is pretty much identical to the one I applied for but with a higher salary!! Thank you guys so much for everything you do and I cannot recommend this podcast enough for just clarity, confidence and the perfect boost you need to use when going into an interview. Thanks again!"

www.interviewboss.com.au - Temping and contract work can be an incredible way to build experience. BUT when your resume is full of short-term roles, how do you keep it clear and easy to follow?
In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma share different strategies you can use to structure a resume with lots of contract gigs.
Remember, there isn't just one way to structure a CV! It's about choosing the format that best explains your experience.
🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Hannah from the US who bought us 15 coffees!
“I started listening in 2022 and secured my first internal job transfer to a different department. Fast forward to now, we have always wanted to relocate out of state and decided 2026 was the year. I applied for a job back in April (it’s now the end of June) and didn’t expect to hear much as it was kind of a stretch goal, in a different state, and a different industry than I currently work. The position had been open for several months because it was a new team they were building and wanted the ‘right candidate’ which was intimidating because I had to be the best of the best, not just the best candidate they were interviewing. After 3 weeks of nothing, I got a phone screening and had about a week to prepare. Through each stage of the process, I listened to tons of your episodes on phone screenings, perfecting my 'tell me about yourself' answer, pep talks when waiting, how to talk about relocation, how to prep for multiple interview rounds, panel interviews, negotiating start date, and the importance of research. I'm proud to say that after a 2.5-month, lengthy, intense job interview process, I received an offer at the very top of the salary range and was able to negotiate my start date to fit the move and a small break. THANK YOU, INTERVIEW BOSS!”

www.interviewboss.com.au - Waiting to hear back after a job interview is one of the most agonising parts of the job search.
So when TikTok tells you there's one more thing you should be doing to increase your chances, it's hard not to wonder...am I missing out?
In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma unpack the growing trend of "value-add" interview follow-ups, where candidates are told to send articles, ideas or extra information to prove they're the best person for the job. Does it actually work, or is it just creating unnecessary stress for job seekers?
If you've ever worried there are secret interview rules everyone else knows except you, this episode is for you.
🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Gillian!
"Hello my Aussie Queens! I am so incredibly grateful that I found you when I did. 'Tell me about yourself,' you say? Well, sure! After nearly six years in my current role, I finally realized that the paycheck wasn't worth the terrible culture. I decided it was time to seriously look for something new, and holy crap...things have changed! After four months, more than 100 applications, and over 20 interviews, I am thrilled to say that I start my new position in just over a week. Listening to your podcast throughout this process has been absolutely crucial to my growth and confidence. I took the water, and I never once had to clench my butt cheeks because I felt prepared. I knew exactly what I wanted to share about myself, what my 'best bits' were, and was able to let my genuine self shine through. There were moments when I was certain an offer was coming...and it didn't. There were other times when I knew they were just keeping me 'warm,' only to receive another rejection letter. And then another. And another. Your honesty about how brutal this process can be on your mindset was such a gift. The laughter, the reality checks, and the constant reminders that rejection isn't a reflection of your worth carried me through so many moments when I questioned myself, my value, and my decisions. I am beyond excited to join my new team. I know I have so much to offer, and they were able to see that because of the confidence and tools I gained from you both. Also, I was able to negotiate my salary and won't be losing any pay! Also, can we please give a massive shout-out to the recruiters who genuinely care? The ones who communicate, support candidates, and treat people like humans. There were several times during this process when I didn't even want the job anymore because of how poorly the recruiter handled the initial phone screen. To all the good humans doing recruiting the right way, thank you. Sending a huge thank you from Boise, Idaho, USA. Sarah and Emma, thank you for all the support, encouragement, laughs, and wisdom you share with so many people navigating one of the most vulnerable experiences of their careers. My heart is full. Cheers, Gillian."
