EMBERING EFFIGY, the “Southern Fried Thrash Metal” threesome hailing from the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia are making some noise in venues all across the Southeast with their blistering live shows and their recently released new album, OUT OF THE WOODS, featuring 8 tracks of old school thrash infused with a generous blend of blast beats, high energy punk, filthy breakdowns, and even some old school “mosh parts” for good measure.  There’s enough fast stuff, heavy stuff, and sick stuff on this album to give anyone who hears it a complete stank face makeover.

We recently had a chance to hang out with EMBERING EFFIGY and do a full playthrough of OUT OF THE WOODS (deep within the insulated walls of Bunkerpoon Studios), including some track by track insights from the band as well as some Q&A about their history, their live shows, and of course the new album and everything that went into making it (along with some ultra hilarious vulgarity that’s too obscene to be mentioned here).

Ever since compact discs came out in the mid-1980s, the concept of SIDE 1 and SIDE 2 on an album sort of fell by the wayside. And with this new quantum leap in technology, the entire process of consuming music began to transform. 

 

By the late 80’s and early 90’s, CD sales began outselling vinyl records and cassette tapes, due in large part to convenience and technological innovation, as vinyl records (albums) were limited to a maximum of 20 minutes or so per side and cassette tapes maxed out at around 30 minutes per side. But prior to compact discs, consuming music was (at a minimum) a two-step process which involved inserting the cassette into your tape deck and pressing play or placing the album on your turntable and dropping the needle to begin your music enjoyment experience. 

 

With the advent of compact discs, the maximum recording space jumped to 74 minutes, far exceeding the limitations of records and tapes, and bonus: you didn’t have to flip anything over and repeat the process as all of the album tracks were included on one side (so to speak) as one complete, seamless work that systematically eliminated the technologically imposed intermission which required ejecting the cassette or removing the stylus from the album and flipping it over to SIDE TWO, as a CD version of an album quickly became a singular entity devoid of one side or another and just became one complete work (think Reign In Blood on cassette, where both sides are repeated).

 

In the case of a near perfect album, sides didn’t really matter, but what we’ve come to notice over the years is that SIDE TWO would sometimes be superior to SIDE ONE. Granted, this is not by any means an exact science nor is it always a guarantee, but many of the finest albums in metal history have a SIDE TWO that is much better than SIDE ONE. So, with that in mind, we invite you to JOIN US as we go through a few of our favorites to determine whether or not there is any validity to the claim that SIDE TWO IS BETTER THAN SIDE ONE.

Many folks in certain parts of the world have been calling the United States “The Great Satan” for decades, long before ROB ZOMBIE’s eighth studio album, THE GREAT SATAN, was called that.

 

“…and the first words out of her mouth when she pulls up: ‘Can I inspect your meat?’”

 

Released on 02/27/2026 on Nuclear Blast, the newest studio offering from ROB ZOMBIE, THE GREAT SATAN, has a much heavier, darker, and more aggro feel than past albums, and the album art, the album title, and the album sound all fit perfectly within the “haunted house motif” that has become part of his signature style and sound.

Released on August 22, 1989, CLIMBIN’ THE WALLS, the major label debut album from Martinsburg, West Virginia thrash metal savants WRATHCHILD AMERICA, is undoubtedly one of the most uniquely profound thrash metal albums in all of heavy metal history to be crafted by one of the most extraordinarily talented (and criminally underrated) bands in the entire genre. 

 

And to think, for many metalheads back in the day, their very first experience with this album was in a LIVE concert setting, opening for Testament. Just imagine how blessed one would be to see a band as unbelievable as WRATHCHILD AMERICA (for the very first time) opening for an established act like Testament and being completely blown away after just one show, having NEVER heard the album before getting to see them LIVE!

With a stylistic palette that blends thrash, heavy metal, and 70’s classic rock, there is absolutely NO ONE else in metal who sounds ANYTHING like them. And if you’re jonesing to purchase a copy of CLIMBIN’ THE WALLS, not to worry, because it was recently re-released (along with their second and final album, 3-D) as part of a two-CD package with a couple of bonus tracks.

Get ready for a trip back through time to the days of yore, when thrash was still riding high and the opening band for Testament absolutely blew the minds of everyone in attendance when you JOIN US for one of the greatest and most underrated metal albums of all time with WRATHCHILD AMERICA: CLIMBIN’ THE WALLS.

 

(Also, just in case you might be wondering, there’s an early (we’re talking “6 years ago, during the Hodges Era” early: 02/20/2020) episode appropriately dubbed WRATHSAZ, which is a combo episode featuring both WRATHCHILD AMERICA and the darker, groovier, heavier incarnation that followed, Souls At Zero.)
