Why “Just Listen More” Is Bad Advice
Today, I want to talk about probably one of the most common questions I see people asking online, especially on platforms like Xiaohongshu: How do I improve my English listening?
Should I listen to English podcasts every day? Should I watch American TV shows? Should I turn off the subtitles? Should I listen to the news?
And since you’re listening to Blend Inn right now, maybe you’re wondering: If I just keep listening to this podcast, will my English listening naturally get better?
Well… hopefully. But… not necessarily.
Because I think one of the biggest misconceptions about listening is that if you just keep exposing yourself to English—even if you barely understand it—eventually your listening will magically improve.
I don’t think that’s quite how it works.
Think about it. If I give you a podcast about quantum physics and you understand 10% of it, and then you listen to it for an hour every day, are you really practicing English listening?
Maybe.
But you might also just be spending an hour every day not understanding English.
And that’s an important distinction.
You don’t improve your listening simply by listening to more things you don’t understand. You improve by gradually understanding more of what you listen to.

English Learning Card|Build an English Bubble for Better Listening
1. One-minute summary|
Improving English listening is not simply a matter of listening more, especially when most of the material is incomprehensible. Progress happens when you gradually understand more of what you hear. One effective approach is to build an “English bubble” around a subject you already love and understand. David did this with basketball: because he knew the players, teams, rules, and recent games, context helped him predict meaning and absorb recurring vocabulary. Strong listening combines bottom-up skills, such as recognizing sounds and sentence structures, with top-down skills, such as using background knowledge and expectations. Good material should offer three things: genuine interest, enough familiar knowledge and vocabulary, and something new that stretches you. Rather than looking up every unknown word, notice repetition and check the words that keep returning. Start small by replacing one part of your normal content consumption with English, then branch out as your confidence grows.
2. Key vocabulary & expressions|
3. Useful sentence patterns|
You don’t … simply by + V-ing; you … by + V-ing.:
You don’t improve your listening simply by hearing more English; you improve it by understanding more of what you hear.
Instead of + V-ing,
Instead of choosing random podcasts, start with a topic you already love.

If I were …, I would …:用虚拟语气表达假设情况下的选择或建议。
If I were choosing listening material, I would look for interest, familiarity, and challenge.
The more …, the easier/more …:表示“越……,就越……”。
The more vocabulary you understand, the easier the content becomes.
Even if …, … can still …:表示“即使……,仍然可以……”。
Even if you don’t understand every word, you can still follow the main idea.

How did Mexico lose half of its country? How did that change the fate of both countries?

English Learning Card|How the Mexican-American War Reshaped North America
1. One-minute summary|
After gaining independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico controlled a vast territory that included much of today’s American Southwest. Many American settlers moved into Texas, but conflicts over culture, political autonomy, and slavery eventually fueled the Texas Revolution. Texas became an independent republic in 1836 and joined the United States in 1845. A border dispute and President James K. Polk’s expansionist agenda helped trigger the Mexican-American War in 1846. After Mexico’s defeat, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo transferred a huge amount of land to the United States. The war reshaped both countries, intensified the debate over slavery, and left a lasting Mexican influence on the culture of the American Southwest.

It was not until … that …:强调“直到……
It was not until 1845 that Texas joined the United States.
If + had done, … might/would have done:
If Mexico had kept California, North American history might have unfolded differently.
What makes … fascinating is that …:表达“……
What makes this war fascinating is that its effects can still be seen today.

Imagine you’re about to board a plane, and someone tells you there’s more than a 10% chance it could crash.
Would you still get on?
Now imagine the plane is artificial intelligence—and the possible outcome isn’t a crash, but the extinction of humanity.
It sounds like science fiction. But some of the people building advanced AI genuinely believe the risk is real.
So where does that “10%” come from? What are AI researchers actually afraid of? And if the risk were real, would we ever choose to stop building?
In this episode, we talk about AI doomsday, alignment, superintelligence, p(doom), and the strange logic of an AI arms race.

Simone
“A difficult experience can become part of your story without becoming your whole identity.”

Today, I want to talk about something that sounds very simple, but the more I think about it, the more complicated it becomes: Why is it so hard to make friends as an adult?
According to a major report released by the WHO last year, roughly one in six people around the world experiences loneliness. And interestingly, loneliness is actually more common among adolescents and young adults than among older people.
You can be 25, living in New York, working at a big company, going to bars every weekend, with 2,000 followers on Instagram—and still feel incredibly lonely.
So today, let’s talk about adult friendship: why it gets harder, what modern loneliness actually looks like, and maybe most importantly, what we can do about it.
