In this Haunted History episode, we expose how modern gynecology and obstetrics were built on the suffering of women—especially enslaved Black women experimented on by Marion Sims without anesthesia. We’ll trace how the flat-on-the-back birthing position came not from nature but from patriarchal convenience, how women were denied pain relief for religious reasons, and how procedures like routine episiotomies, the so-called “husband stitch,” and even the chainsaw were justified.
