Fight! Davis Cup dust-ups as GB out, WTA spoil Keys return and what next for Novak Djokovic?
TENNIS WEEKLY CROWDFUND: https://www.gofundme.com/f/tennis-weekly Tennis Weekly 2025 Crowdfund is now open! Your support keeps us going no matter how large or small is hugely appreciated, from listening to donating we couldn’t be more thankful to our audience! Now that the Australian Open is over it’s back to the tour and this week the main focus is the dramatic Davis Cup Qualifiers 1st Round which saw upset and drama pan out across the globe. The main focus was one particular incident between Belgium and Chile that quite literally left Christian Garin floored when Zizou Bergs charged at him and collided at a change of ends. On the ATP tour it was Felix Auger-Aliassime who came out on top after choosing to play the Open Occitanie instead of Davis Cup just for Canada. He won his 7th title in Montpelier and has now almost reversed his 0-8 record in finals and has gone 7-2 since 2022. Elsewhere on the WTA tour there was a maiden 500 victory for Ekaterina Alexandrova who defeated former Australian Open semi-finalist Dayana Yastremska in a hard fought final. Alexandrova even bageled Karolina Muchova on her way to the title. Joel and Chris also answer a mailbag involving Australian Open winner Madison Keys being removed from the entry list of the Austin Open due to a technicality and whether the WTA should be doing more to build the profile of 250s rather than just removing their star players that would mean bums on seats and money in the bank for the smaller tournaments.SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show [email protected] Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. Australian Open SFs - Keys shocks Swiatek in classic, Djokovic retires to boos, Finals preview
The Australian Open Finals are SET. Alexander Zverev will face defending champion and World No.1 Jannik Sinner for a chance to win his first Major. The big news from the semifinals was the retirement of Novak Djokovic after losing the first set against the tall german. He was suffering from the same muscle tear that affected him in his quarterfinal win over Carlos Alcaraz and knew going into the match it was unlikely he would be able to finish it. Despite his best efforts on court the Australian crowd booed off their 10 time champion and 24 time grand slam champion for cutting short their afternoon of tennis which reflected badly on the tournament and the aussie fans. Zverev will face 2 time major champion Jannik Sinner in the Final who defeated Ben Shelton after a spirited first set from the american. Sinner steamrolled the last two sets but was seen limping in the third set. Joel and Chris ask - will he be fit for the final and predict who the champion will be on Sunday. On the women’s side there was a HUGE upset and come from behind win for American Madison Keys. Keys a former finalist at slam level previously 8 years ago at the US Open will hope to go one better on Saturday against World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka. Keys caused the biggest upset on the women’s side when she saved match point and then recovered from 5-7 down in a super tie break to secure her spot in the final by defeated Iga Swiatek. Swiatek was so close to setting up a 1 vs 2 final but with the loss Sabalenka will remain the World Number 1 no matter the result on Saturday. Sabalenka will be going for the three-peat and the one thing we know for sure is that there will be some big hitting on Rod Laver in the final! Australian Open QFs - Djokovic defies Alcaraz, Gauff falls short and Swiatek's VAR ball drama
We're down to the Final 8 in Melbourne Park with Kim and Chris ready to catch up on all the Quarter Final action from the Australian Open. In the men's draw, 10-time Champion Novak Djokovic defied injury and expectation to defeat Carlos Alcaraz in 4 sets whilst Jannik Sinner continued his dominance down under with a thrashing of home hope Alex de Minaur. On the women’s side, Coco Gauff is out to a resurgent Paula Badosa, who will play her good friend and defending Champion Aryna Sabalenka in the semi finals after Sabalenka survived a scare from Pavlyuchenkova. Iga Swiatek carried on her one-sided scoreline dominance over Emma Navarro although controversy arose with a dodgy double bounce debate! In other news, a feather stopped play between Alexander Zverev and Tommy Paul much to the German's annoyance whilst the team give an update on Collect a Set (spoiler alert: scores struggling across the board!).
