Ancient philosophers understood The Odyssey as far more than an adventure story. They believed it contained hidden layers that exposed deep truths about the structure of reality and the human condition. We trace the tradition of esoteric myth interpretation from the Orphics, Pythagoreans and the Derveni Papyrus through Plato, Porphyry, Macrobius and Proclus, examining the possibility that Homer encoded a metaphysical account of the cosmos, incarnation and the soul’s struggle to return home. We also explore the provocative Platonic idea that Hades may not simply be somewhere we go after death, but the embodied world we are living in now.
