In this fear, they devise a plan to deceive Israel into thinking that they are weary travelers coming from afar, in hopes that Israel might make a treaty with them. This caused five of the tribes in Canaan to gather together as one in an attempt to make war against Israel. But even though their numbers were large, they were no match for the God of Israel. He caused hail to go before them and even allowed the sun to stand still until the armies of the Canaanite kings were thoroughly defeated.

The spies come back confident that this will be an easy victory and that they don’t even need to send all their men to battle. But when the battle takes place, they begin to lose, and Joshua orders a retreat. God shows Joshua that His hand has caused this because of a hidden sin within the camp of Israel. A wrong which must be made right before the people can proceed to take the promised land.

The next day, Joshua has the army march around the walls of Jericho with the priests in front blowing their trumpet. This happened, with no visible result, for 6 days. But on the 7th day, God caused the walls of Jericho to fall down and the people conquered the city sparing only Rahab and her family.
