Stopping by the Artist Friendly studio, he discusses rebuilding his life through gratitude, the intricacies of growing up in the spotlight, and finding balance between acting and making music with his band, Something Out West.

More than 20 years since their inception, ⁠Papa Roach⁠ continue to thrive.

Their 2000 album Infest seems to grow bigger every year as new people discover songs like “Last Resort” and “Blood Brothers.” They also remain on the road in support of their 2022 LP Ego Trip, including wrapping the second leg of their own Rockzilla tour and supporting Shinedown across the U.S. last year.

“I’m not good when shit’s just calm, quiet, still — I need some chaos,” Shaddix ⁠told ⁠⁠Alternative Press⁠ in 2022. “I’ve got too much energy inside, and if I just sit stagnant, it drives me fucking mad. I need that release — that’s why I go run all the time. That’s why I go to the gym, because I’m an energetic being. So performing is such a healthy experience for me. I get to explode, physically and emotionally.”

Before she signed to Warner in 2013, Rexha was in a short-lived electropop band with Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz called Black Cards, which led to touring with Travie McCoy, multiple solo albums, and a summer on Warped Tour in 2015. Now she’s freshly independent, forming a partnership with indie label and distributor EMPIRE.

In a conversation with Joel, they get into pushing yourself forward, turning pain into songwriting, and her new visual album, Dirty Blonde, out Friday (June 12).

“I feel like I can always do better — this is the problem with me — but there are some records on there that I’m absolutely so proud of…” she says. “I don’t like being stuck in a box. I grew up on so many different sounds… If I wanna do a classical album next, I’m gonna do that.”
