He handed out advice like candy at Halloween. Go see a counselor. Go to a grief group.
Then his son died, and David Kessler had to take his own advice.
It took him three tries to walk through the door. Traffic. No parking. This shouldn't be happening to me.
He finally sat down with other parents who had buried their children. On the table sat books about grief. His books.
He couldn't be the author in that room. He had to be the father who lost a son.
Denial came. So did acceptance. But acceptance felt like a floor, not a way through.
So he went back to Viktor Frankl and found the thing that cracked it open.
The meaning is not in the death. The meaning is in who you become after it.

Sage Robbins spent the first two or three decades of her life dressing for other people.
Looking to please. Looking to be approved of.
She calls holding up that energy exactly what it was. Exhausting.
Then something shifted. Not from a new outfit or more attention, but from pain that rearranged her.
On the other side of it she found ease. An inner comfort with herself she never felt when she was young.
She sits with Lewis and talks about the goodness that was always inside her, just running on the wrong fuel.
And why turning 40 or 50 isn't the end of anything. It's a new beginning.

You tell yourself at least I have a job.
At least it's not worse.
Susan David has a name for that move.
Forced false positivity. A denial strategy wrapped in rainbows and sparkles and social media memes.
It sounds harmless. What could be wrong with being grateful?
Here's the cost. You stop feeling the thing that was trying to tell you something.
You turn your back on yourself.
And five years later you're in the same job, the same unhappiness, holding the same information you never used.
Susan calls it hustling a war inside yourself. Fighting the emotion. Avoiding it. Trying to feel something else instead.
The research is blunt about where that leads. Lower wellbeing. Higher anxiety, depression, burnout.
And the part that stings most: it wrecks your relationships too, because people can feel when you're not being real.
This one reframes gratitude, grief, and every emotion you've been told to swallow.

Dr. Caroline Leaf explains we attract others to restore balance, but attempting to fix them rarely works. She details how one husband transformed his marriage by recognizing his wife's "nagging" triggered childhood wounds, not perfectionism. Leaf emphasizes parents' relationship patterns, resolved or not, enormously impact kids' future bonds. She advocates organized, structured communication so families acknowledge clashes, align on resolutions and model managing tensions.
