Urgent Bite 321 - Hand Foot and Mouth Disease and considering the Rule Bias

    28/08/2026 | 13min
Hand foot and mouth disease is a common viral illness that almost always affects children under 5.

Urgent Bite 320 - Smith's Fracture and reflections on opinions

    21/08/2026 | 11min
Smith's fracture of the wrist is the opposite of a Colles fracture and is an important fracture to identify in urgent care.

Smith was a successor to Colles, and disagreed with Colles' definition of the Colles fracture.  This offers an opportunity to reflect on the way we use opinions in medical practice, how opinions may vary and must be open to change.

If you would like to read Smith's original treatise on fractures, you can find it at this link.   Read from page 130 for the discussions around Colles, and from page 160 for the description of Smith's fracture

Urgent Bite 318 - Topical Steroids via Urgent Care

    07/08/2026 | 12min
Topical steroids are commonly prescribed through urgent care, but we must be mindful of adding to inappropriate use and inadvertent misuse by patients.

Patients must be clear about how much to apply and how often it must be used.   They need to be aware of the potency of each preparation.  Changes to labelling in 2028 in NZ will help to show how strong each cream is.
