    Black October

    02/11/2026 | 1h 13min
    It’s been a rough month if you work in cybersecurity. Some are calling it Black October. Today we’ll talk about two of the major security events: PHP2Shell and eMudhra’s TLS certificates. But we’ll also have some fun AI news, too, including the second half of my tutorial on making your own apps using a free chatbot.

    In other news: Google fixes serious Pixel phone bugs; North Korea blamed for $6.3B crypto heist; Google using your email, photos for ads targeting; NM judge fines Meta $25B; Israeli firm used ads to deliver spyware; Utah judge rules VPN law invalid; CA public school data leak; Canada’s Crime Stoppers leaks 1.5M tips spanning decades; DHS breached affecting 41k employees; people are hacking their smart TVs to make them dumb.

    DROP Your Data

    26/10/2026 | 1h 6min
    As with many consumer protection laws, California is leading the way with regard to data privacy. In recent years, with the Delete Act and the DROP tool (Delete Request and Opt-out Platform), California residents have gained a lot more power over who can collect their personal data and even been given a simple, one-stop site for requesting deletion of all their data from third parties. And thanks to CA, we will all have the ability to globally request that websites not collect or share our personal data with a simple browser setting. I’ll be discussing these wonderful tools with the Executive Director of CalPrivacy, Tom Kemp, and how they can even help non-residents to claw back some control of their data on the web.

    Build Your Own Apps with AI

    19/10/2026 | 1h 19min
    In the past, we’ve been told that “there’s an app for that” – meaning, if you search the app store, surely you can find a pre-existing app that does what you’re looking for. But maybe it does a lot of stuff you don’t want, too. Maybe it’s chock full of ads or extracts your personal info. Maybe it just costs too much or requires a subscription. But you now have the power to create your own custom apps, without knowing a single thing about coding. I’ll explain how.

    In the news: Microsoft fixes a record 1400+ bugs this month; US shuts down dozens of North Korean laptop farms; how to validate Amazon messages; Google starts linking all your accounts to your phone; European solar, wind farms vulnerable online; your car shares lots of your data; AI can pinpoint dwellings from a single internal photo; Amazon rolling out smart glasses to drivers; Google is saving your voice, video, photos from AI; OK judge rules ALPR searches require warrants; creator has vibe-coded replacements for Adobe, Microsoft suites.

    IP Reputation Laundering

    12/10/2026 | 55min
    Residential proxy networks have become very popular ways for bad guys to launder their illicit activities through our normal home network traffic. By mixing in their traffic with ours, they are able to use (and abuse) the good reputation of our home IP address. Many of us have unwittingly allowed this to happen by using cheap streaming boxes or installing shady apps on our smart TVs. Today we’ll discuss residential proxies and botnets with Dan Goodin, Senior Security Editor at Ars Technica.

    Hold Off on Muse

    05/10/2026 | 54min
    Meta has released a very powerful new AI agent app called Muse. Likewise, OpenAI has released a similar app called Dots. Both apps feature charming, friendly and decidedly non-threatening avatars to perhaps assuage your fears of AI. But these agents ask for extensive access to your data and devices, which in my view is – as for right now – too dangerous. We’ve already seen these agents doing things their owners were not expecting and did not want. I’ll tell those stories and give you my advice on using AI agents.

    In other news: Android 17 adds welcome security features; weakness found in important encryption algorithm; update TeamViewer ASAP; some Samsung fridges bricked by SW update; CA closes data broker law loophole; USPS trialing cameras on vehicles; iPhone inactivity reboot thwarted? ; malware steals water utility credentials; US military and FBI employee records stolen; Amazon blocks Meta’s AI agent; Muse reads user’s Apple Messages;
