Munich Moments

On today's episode we're going to go back to the original Munich Moment when the conference began in 1963, and see how the door was opened for the Russians to come in and join the conversation after the Cold War ended. And then we're going to hear about another open door, the one to NATO membership, and the role the conference played in all of it. Finally we'll look at the current posture of Russia toward the West amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine.

In 2007, Russian President Vladimir Putin came to the Munich Security Conference to deliver a speech that still reverberates today. He talked about the threat of a “unipolar world.” By this, Putin meant a world in which the United States was the sole superpower.

The speech marked a dramatic shift in the posture of Russia toward the West after the fall of the Soviet Union.

The Munich Security Conference might just be the most famous conference you’ve never heard of. And in this special series, we’re going to take you behind the scenes of this global gathering, where again and again, since 1963, history has been made.

In this episode, host Jessie Graham takes a look back at the 2003 conference, when German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer confronted U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. Rumsfeld was making a case for European nations to join the United States in a coalition against Iraq. Fischer’s remark “I am not convinced” was a stark rebuke to Rumsfeld and marked a dramatic shift in the relationship between Europe and the United States.
