Lululemon’s Brand Crisis Deepens & Trump Targets Canadian Companies

    10/09/2026 | 48min
In this episode of The Canadian Investor Podcast, Simon and Dan break down a rough quarter for Lululemon as falling comparable sales, heavier markdowns and weakening international growth raise serious questions about whether the brand can turn things around.
They also look at BRP’s latest results and how tariffs are creating major uncertainty for an otherwise well-run business, before digging into the latest Canada–U.S. trade tensions surrounding Bombardier and Canadian banks.
Then, they turn to Couche-Tard, where fuel profits remain strong but merchandise growth continues to struggle as consumers increasingly trade down and look for value. Finally, they check in on GameStop’s ongoing pivot toward collectibles and whether the company is quietly building a more sustainable business despite continued declines in its traditional operations.
    Tickers of stocks discussed:
    Lululemon (LULU)
    BRP (DOO.TO)
    Bombardier (BBD.B.TO)
    Alimentation Couche-Tard (ATD.TO)
    GameStop (GME)

Data Center Revolt and the Best Ways to Invest in Pharma & Biotech

    07/09/2026 | 48min
The AI infrastructure boom is running into a growing obstacle: communities and regulators are pushing back against massive data center projects.
Simon and Dan look at why opposition to new data centers is accelerating, particularly around electricity demand, utility costs, water usage and the strain these projects can put on existing infrastructure. They also discuss what delays could mean for the AI buildout, which parts of the ecosystem could benefit from constrained computing capacity, and why Alberta is emerging as an important battleground for new projects.
Then, Simon follows up on last week’s Royalty Pharma deep dive by looking at the different ways investors can gain exposure to pharmaceuticals and biotech. From diversified ETFs to established drugmakers, higher-risk biotech companies and the royalty model, they break down the trade-offs between diversification, upside potential and clinical-development risk.
They also discuss why seemingly “safe” pharmaceutical giants can still carry significant concentration risk, how AI could reshape drug development, and why healthcare may be one of the more overlooked ways to invest in the AI theme.
Stocks/ETFs discussed: RPRX, MRNA, MRK, JNJ, ABBV, LLY, VRTX, REGN, AMGN, GILD, ISRG, SHOP, HUT, SEI, TT, IXJ, ZHU.TO, XPH, IHE, IBB, XBI.

The BoC Is Concerned About Inflation & Bond Yields Hit New Multi-Year Highs

    05/09/2026 | 59min
Bond yields are climbing, energy prices are surging, and central banks are being forced to navigate an increasingly complicated inflation picture.
Simon and Dan break down what the bond market may be signaling and why higher long-term yields matter even if the Bank of Canada keeps its policy rate unchanged. They discuss the potential impact on Canadian housing, rental construction and mortgage financing, along with why inflation-adjusted home prices can continue falling even when nominal prices stabilize.
They also look at the sharp increase in diesel prices and refinery margins, what higher transportation costs could eventually mean for consumers, and whether households have enough room left to absorb another round of price increases.
The conversation then turns to monetary policy following the latest Bank of Canada decision and Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole remarks, before digging into one of the biggest risks surrounding the AI boom: financing.
With hundreds of billions being poured into AI infrastructure, rising borrowing costs and increasingly interconnected financing arrangements could become a major vulnerability. Simon and Dan discuss what happens if AI companies ultimately generate less revenue than expected, whether hyperscalers could be left with excess capacity, and why enormous technological breakthroughs can still coincide with massive capital destruction for investors.
Stocks/ETFs discussed: NVDA, MSFT, GOOGL, ORCL, TSLA, WMT, TGT, HD, LOW, DLTR, L.TO, DOL.TO.

Nvidia’s AI Boom Gets Bigger, Canadian Banks Hold Up and Dollar Tree’s Turnaround

    03/09/2026 | 49min
Nvidia (NVDA) delivered another massive quarter, with data center revenue surging and management forecasting extraordinary growth ahead. But as the AI buildout gets larger, Nvidia is also becoming increasingly involved in financing, demand guarantees and other arrangements across the AI ecosystem. Simon and Dan break down why that matters, where the risks are building, and what could happen if some of AI’s biggest customers eventually pull back.
They also wrap up Canadian bank earnings season with a closer look at CIBC (CM.TO), including rising mortgage delinquencies, commercial credit trends and the growing importance of wealth management and capital markets across the Canadian banks.
Salesforce (CRM) delivered a strong quarter as its AI products continue gaining traction, providing another example of why not every software company is being disrupted by AI.
Dollar Tree (DLTR) continues its turnaround, expanding its multi-price strategy and improving store operations as more consumers search for value. Simon and Dan compare its progress with Dollarama (DOL.TO) and discuss why Dollar Tree could potentially offer more upside despite Dollarama remaining the stronger operator.
Finally, Best Buy (BBY) provides an interesting look at consumer spending, with a notable divergence emerging between its U.S. and Canadian businesses.

Two Stocks That Could Surprise Investors | AppLovin & Royalty Pharma Deep Dive

    31/08/2026 | 44min
In this episode of The Canadian Investor Podcast, we do a deep dive on two companies we haven’t covered much before: Royalty Pharma and AppLovin.
We start with Royalty Pharma, a unique business that finances pharmaceutical and biotech products in exchange for future royalty streams. We break down how the business model works, why it has similarities to precious metals royalty companies like Franco-Nevada, and how investors should think about portfolio receipts, cash flow, milestone payments, drug approval risk, concentration risk and capital allocation.
We then turn to AppLovin, one of the most talked-about stocks in the market. We look at how its AI-powered mobile advertising platform works, why the company generates extremely high margins with minimal capital expenditures, and what makes the business so profitable.
We also discuss the risks facing AppLovin, including slowing growth, competition from Meta, Apple and Alphabet, concerns raised by short sellers, and why the market is having such a hard time valuing the company after a massive run-up and sharp drawdown.
Tickers discussed: RPRX, APP, FNV.TO, WPM.TO, ISRG, META, GOOGL, GOOG, TTD
