  • The Architecture of Evil
I've long been fascinated by the story of Thomas Kirkbride, a Quaker and architect who believed that our environment played a crucial role in our mental health. Kirkbride is responsible for the building of "insane asylums" across the country, imposing, fortress-like structures that to the eye looked like they were designed to star in terrifying Ari Aster films. In reality, Kirkbride envisioned these buildings as instrumental to healing. If one were to have a bird's eye view of the hospitals, they looked like bird's wings outstretched, ready to take flight. The sickest patients were placed at the furthest end of the wings; as they healed, they moved closer to the exit. And to freedom. This is the story about a different kind of fortress. One specifically designed to keep people in and to cause extreme discomfort while inside. Judging by the title, this story touches on darker themes, specifically on the ways we cause suffering. There is so much suffering. But as always, we hope it leads to meaningful conversations like the one we had with Freddy. If you have wanted to submit a story but worried it was too short, this is your time! This is an official call for entires for your short but scary tales. We'll be compiling our favorites for a future anthology episode, so send them on! Got a shadow person lurking in your bedroom? Strangers that invade your dreams? • The Old Spanish Treasure Cave
Happy Heat Dome to all who celebrate! For those listening in the northern hemisphere, it's likely you are very, very warm. At podcast HQ in Memphis, it's recommended we drink water and stay indoors between 11 AM and November 2. It's pretty brutal. Where it's always a consistent and pleasant 58 degrees? The Old Spanish Treasure Cave in Gravette, Arkansas. I adore a roadside attraction. But one that comes with a very unexpected, non advertised supernatural twist? It was a spring break road trip adventure of a lifetime. Grab some road snacks and settle in for a Goonies-style tall tale of Spanish invaders, hidden treasure, and quite possibly a ghost in the darkest recesses of an underground cavern. Check out their website for photos of the cave and some of the artifacts mentioned in the story: https://spanish-treasure-cave.com Enjoy! And thank you as always for your support of the show! • The Shadow Man
In the late 1990s in Sydney, Australia, Damon hangs with an eclectic, vibrant friend group in an old Victorian share house. They don't talk about the man that watches them. Because the Shadow Man is always watching. **Spring is springing here at Podcast HQ so we're sneezy and Benadrylled up and excited to share this slow burn from Down Under. One of the greatest pleasures of producing this show is hearing from you and hearing stories from literally all around the globe. To that end, I have a show bucket-list request: I want an Antarctican ghost story! Does anyone know a scientist at McMurdo, a cook working in a restaurant in the bottom of the world, a weather observer out on the plains that has seen something they cannot explain? Send them our way! Thanks as always for supporting our show in the myriad ways that you do! Support this podcast on Patreon!
