Anemia is a common complication in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In fact, nearly half of all patients with stage 5 CKD have associated anemia. Historically, it has been a challenge to manage anemia in these patients; to successfully treat them clinicians need to understand the pathophysiology of anemia in CKD, why the treatments have been, for the most part, ineffective, and how emerging therapies are overcoming these challenges.
